Service Overview

In Hong Kong's summer you want the windows open for air, but not the mosquitoes that come with it — a window screen is the most direct answer. Amgen installs and replaces mosquito screens on all kinds of windows: flats with no screens can have them added; old screens with torn mesh, loose frames or magnetic strips that no longer hold can be replaced as a whole; and customers already replacing windows or fitting grilles can have screens done in the same visit, with no second contractor to find.

Our range covers fixed-frame screens, sliding-track screens, 3M magnetic removable screens, retractable (invisible) screens, stainless steel security mesh and pleated balcony screen doors, and we recommend the most suitable type for your window style, position and habits. Frame and mesh are normally replaced together so the screen sits flush against the window frame with no gaps.

Unlike a screen-only shop, Amgen is an aluminium window contractor: when we measure on site we also check the hinges, handles and seals, so the window still opens smoothly and stays watertight after the screen goes on. All works are carried out by licensed technicians, licence number MWC 316/2021, with a 3-year warranty on completion.

What to Know About Screen Installation and Replacement

When does a window screen need replacing?

Torn or loose mesh: a small hole can be patched temporarily, but once the mesh has come away from the frame, or the holes are large or numerous, insects get straight through and the whole screen should be replaced.

Warped frame or jammed track: a sliding screen with a warped frame no longer slides or closes properly and leaves a gap against the window frame.

Weak magnets, screen keeps falling off: on magnetic screens the strips lose their magnetism or the adhesive fails over time, so the screen drops as soon as the window opens.

Old screen no longer fits after a window replacement: the new window's dimensions and track differ from the old one, so the old screen usually cannot go back and a new one should be made to suit the new window.

Mesh clogged with grime: years of cooking fumes and dust block the mesh, restricting airflow, and cleaning no longer restores it.

The process: from enquiry to completion

Enquiry: WhatsApp or call us with the window type, number and location; photos help.

Free on-site measurement: the technician measures the inside of the frame, confirms the window type, any grille and the opening direction, recommends a screen type and quotes on the spot.

Fabrication: frame and mesh are made to the measured size, usually within one to two weeks.

Installation: the technician fits and adjusts the screen so it sits flush and opens smoothly; for a replacement the old screen is removed at the same time.

Check and warranty: the finished screen is checked for gaps and jamming, with a 3-year warranty.

Why not put off a damaged screen?

Insects get in: a torn screen is no screen at all, and in Hong Kong's summer dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis are both mosquito-borne, which matters most for homes with children or the elderly.

Ventilation suffers: keeping the windows shut to keep insects out makes the flat stuffy and pushes up the air-conditioning bill.

Safety: a loose screen frame can be blown off in the wind and fall into the street or onto a neighbour.

Harder to match later: once an older screen model is discontinued, matching parts are hard to find and the whole screen has to be replaced anyway.

Cleaning and care

Vacuum loose dust off the mesh, then wipe gently with a damp cloth or soft brush and a mild detergent; never scrub hard.

Removable screens are best taken down and rinsed once a season, more often in a kitchen where there is cooking grease.

Before and after a typhoon or rainstorm, check that the frame has not loosened; on magnetic screens check the strips still hold.

A properly fitted, regularly cleaned screen generally lasts around ten years; consider replacement when the mesh or frame shows the problems described on this page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a screen be fitted to my type of window?

Almost every window type can take one. Sliding windows use sliding-track or retractable screens; casement and top-hung windows use fixed-frame, magnetic or retractable screens; balcony doors use pleated screen doors or stainless steel mesh folding doors. At the free on-site measurement the technician recommends a type for your actual window and frame space — if in doubt, WhatsApp us a photo first.

Can screens be fitted on a window with a grille? Does the grille have to come off?

Yes. Casement-style and some magnetic screens can be fitted with the existing grille kept in place, provided there is enough room around the frame; retractable or sliding-track screens depend on where the grille sits and sometimes need the grille removed or modified first. If you want the grille replaced at the same time, we can arrange both.

Can you replace just the mesh and keep the frame?

We generally recommend replacing frame and mesh together. The old frame is usually warped or its fittings oxidised, so new mesh alone will not sit properly and will need attention again before long; a complete new screen is the only way to guarantee no gaps, and it is covered by the 3-year warranty.

How much does screen installation cost?

The price depends on window size, screen type, quantity and site conditions. We measure on site free of charge and quote on the spot, itemised, with no hidden charges. Fitting several windows in one visit brings the average cost per window down.

Will a screen affect the view or ventilation?

It depends on the type. A retractable (invisible) screen rolls away when not needed and leaves the view completely clear; high-clarity mesh has a fine weave but high light transmission, so the effect on the view is minimal. All types keep the window ventilated — the finer the mesh, the slightly less airflow.

Can screens be fitted at the same time as a window replacement?

Yes, and it is the simplest way. The screens are made to the new window's dimensions and fitted by the same team as the window, so everything matches. Screens from the old window usually cannot be refitted to the new one, so it is worth replacing them during the window replacement.

Can screens be fitted in public housing or HOS flats?

Yes. A screen is a non-structural addition that does not involve the wall, so no minor works submission is needed. In a public housing flat, if the screen is fixed by drilling, check the estate office's rules first; magnetic and clip-on types can be fitted without drilling.

How long does a screen last, and is there a warranty?

Properly fitted and regularly cleaned, a screen generally lasts around ten years. Amgen's screen works carry a 3-year warranty: if the screen comes loose or jams because of installation or materials within that time, we come back and put it right.
